In 1861, Juarez became president of Mexico. Mexico was in financial ruin and defaulted on debts to France, Britain & Spain. They responded by sending their Mexico to demand payment.
Britain and Spain negotiated payment with Mexico, but Napoleon III (France) sent war ships to Mexico driving President Juarez into retreat.
Juarez rounded up a rag-tag force of loyal men and sent them to Puebla. Led by Texas-born General Zaragoza, the 2,000 Mexicans fortified the town and prepared for the French attack of 6,000 troops.
On the fifth of May, 1862, the French began their assault. The battle lasted from daybreak to early evening. The French retreated after they had lost nearly 500 soldiers.
Zaragoza's victory is credited for helping the Mexican resistance (6 years later France withdrew). Today, Mexicans celebrate the anniversary of the Battle of Puebla as Cinco de Mayo, a national holiday in Mexico, and more importantly, a great reason to eat Mexican food and have a Margarita.
If you are in Arizona, you might want a little help with your Margaritas. We really like Margarita Man! They will come to your event with bartenders or rent the Margarita Machine, Ole!
